About Pasco School District
Pasco School District is the heart and centerpiece of the fastest-growing community in Eastern Washington and serves nearly 13,000 school children from the City of Pasco and unincorporated Franklin County. Since 2000, student enrollment increased almost 3,700 students, or an average of over 525 new students a year.
There are 16 campuses in the district: Eleven elementary schools, three middle schools, a four-year high school and an alternative secondary school. Since 2000, the school district has built three new elementary schools, one new middle school, and a high school.
In February 2006, the Pasco voters supported a $83 million bond that allows the district to, among other things, build a new high school. Construction began on the new high school, Chiawana High School, in September 2007. Chiawana opened in August 2009. In partnership with Kennewick School District and Richland School District; Columbia Basin Community College; Washington State University; and Battelle, freshman have the opportunity to enroll in Delta High School. Delta is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM high school that enrolled 100 freshman when it opened this August.
About 73% of Pasco students are minority, including Asian or Pacific Islander (1.4%), African-American (3%), American Indian or Alaskan Native (0.5%), and Hispanic (69%). About 71% of all students come from low-income households and about 4,800 are learning English as their second language. Our students are taught by over 700 teachers, librarians, and counselors and supported by over 600 people including bus drivers, custodians, secretaries, nurses, cooks, home visitors, crossing guards, and librarian clerks. There are 100 school buses to deliver students to school and home again every day traveling over 1.4 million miles a year. At the current rate of growth, the State Office of Public Instruction predicts Pasco enrollment will reach nearly 14,000 in 2009. Leading the State... "Pasco School District serves the most ethnically, socio-economically, and linguistically diverse student population in the State of Washington. Pasco School District is a state leader in innovative, student-centered programs that are based on student needs derived from data."
