Welcome to Chess

CHESS STUDENTS GET REAL WORLD MATH LESSON THANKS TO FIESTA FOODS GROCERY STORE

Fiestival of Math

Food plus math plus community partnerships all add up to an educational afternoon of fun for Chess Elementary students and their families on April 18 when Fiesta Foods grocery store in Pasco hosts the “Fiesta-val of Math,” from 4-5 p.m.

Fiesta Foods serves as the school’s Partners in Educating All Kids! or PEAK! Partner and has designed a unique math night at the store. Each student will receive a check list when they arrive that will help them plan a taco dinner for their family. Students will use their math skills at six stations throughout the store to determine how much of each item they will need based on their family size, and the cost of those items. The goal is for students to apply their math skills with the help of their parents in a more practical way.

“This unique math night will give our students a fun experience in thinking, planning, and calculating with their families in a real life environment,” says Chess Principal Wendi Manthei. “They will be able to use their reading, writing, and mathematics skills outside the classroom and see first-hand how valuable it is to focus on their academics.”

Families will also be treated to entertainment from Chess Elementary students featuring their florkloric dancers, marimba band, guitar team, and choir. Fiesta Foods will have samples of some of the grocery items for the families. Children from other Pasco schools are welcome to participate, but only Chess students who complete their forms will be eligible to win one of three piñatas full of candy courtesy of Fiesta Foods.

Through the PEAK! Partnership local businesses adopt a school, make a financial contribution, and agree to participate in three educational activities during the school year.

“Fiesta Foods takes pride in the community we work in and know the importance of educating our future leaders,” says Fiesta Foods Pasco Manger Juan Torres. “This is an excellent way to think outside the box and make learning fun for everyone.

Principal Manthei
Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have had many exciting events and activities that enhance the learning and experiences available for our students at Rowena Chess this year. We are proud of the participation, excitement and sense of school pride exhibited by our students, and look forward to celebrating many more events and accomplishments this year.

Before we know it, testing time will be here.  Our third, fourth and fifth grade students and teachers have been working hard to prepare for the MSP (Measurements of Student Progress) in May.  All students will participate in district-wide reading and math assessments this spring, also.  Teachers meet each week to discuss academic achievement and plan lessons that will meet the needs of students in their classrooms.  We have dedicated, skilled teachers that make our school a great place to learn.

We hope to see you at school for our next Student Goal Sharing Event on April 24th at 4:00.  Our annual Spring Carnival is planned for May 22nd and Field Day is scheduled for June 5th.  Thanks for entrusting us with your children on a daily basis. It is our honor and pleasure to watch them learn and grow each and every day at Rowena Chess Elementary.

Sincerely,

Wendi Manthei
Principal
