Dear Maya Angelou Families:
Thank you so much for attending your child’s conference. It was wonderful seeing so many of you! If you were not able to make your scheduled appointment, please do not hesitate to call and reschedule. The teachers love to talk about the wonderful things they are seeing your child do this time of year!
Spring is officially here which means that Spring Break is near. There will be no school the week of March 31st -April 4th. I hope that you will have the opportunity to spend some quality time with your child (ren) and make wonderful memories. As the weather begins to get warmer, it is a good time to review some guidelines for appropriate clothing at school. The guidelines are:
· T-shirts and tops need to be full length; waistlines/midriffs and belly buttons should not be showing.
· Tank top straps need to be wide. Spaghetti strap tops can be worn only with sweaters or jackets to cover them.
· Shorts are acceptable, but please, no extremely “short” shorts or skirts. They should be mid-thigh in length.
· We encourage you not to send your children to school wearing flip- flops because they often break and we have to call parents to bring a pair of shoes to school. Also it becomes a safety issue for students who need to participate in PE. Please save flip-flops for home.
MAP testing will begin for students April 7-April 25. The 5th grade students will be taking the Science MSP the month of May. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) pilot window is April 28 through June 6th. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will not be taking the MSP in the areas of reading, math, and writing. They will be participating in the SBAC state pilot. This means we will not receive any results or be given any information on how our students performed on this assessment. But it will be great practice for the students and staff to go through this new assessment process. This pilot will be a great learning experience for staff and students. We will send the testing schedule home as soon as it is completed so you will know when your child (ren) will be taking the assessments. It will also be posted on our school website. We encourage you to schedule any appointments around these dates so that we can minimize the number of retakes that we need to accommodate. In the meantime, the staff will continue to prepare the children for these assessments so they can show what they have learned! A good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast have shown to improve academic performance. We are confident that Angelou students will “show what they know” on each of these assessments.
Thank you for the excellent support you provide for our school and your kids every day. We appreciate all you do!
