Mr. Saul Martinez

My name is Saul Martinez, I'm a visual artist who spent most of his childhood in Walla Walla.  I am an L.A. born Chicano who moved up to Washington state when I was 11.  Go Dodgers!  I received my degree in teaching and Bachelor's in Fine Arts from Eastern Washington University in 2006.   I am a practicing conceptual artist, a high school art teacher, and a member of the Pasco Arts commission.  I'm also the founder and host of the  podcast Con/Safos: LatinX Creatives.

When I create art, I like to think myself as a story teller.  To tell the story of being second generation Mexican-American, I use symbolism to represent the challenges and opportunities that come with being born a minority.  The imagery I choose calls into question socio-political structures, I use it to inspire dialogue, and to explore autobiographical narratives.  As a conceptual artist, my compositions often range from traditional mediums such as charcoal, acrylic, and clay to cardboard, found objects or viewer participation.

I firmly believe that anyone can create.  YOU have a story, personal experiences that deserve to be shared.  When it comes to creativity, just like music, if you make it someone is ready and willing to listen.  Even if you don't think it's very good, it gives you a starting point that only helps you improve if you allow yourself to keep creating.   If you let me, I can get you to draw, paint, or sculpt.  Just give me a chance.

Con/Safos,

Mr. Martinez

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”  -Muhammad Ali
