Pasco High School Senior Named 2026 National Merit Commended Scholar

Pasco High School Senior Named 2026 National Merit Commended Scholar

Pasco School District is proud to announce that Elise Valdez, a senior at Pasco High School, has been recognized as a 2026 National Merit Commended Scholar.

The National Merit Scholarship Program awards the “commended” designation to the top 2–3% of students nationwide who take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). Commended scholars rank among the top 50,000 students out of more than 1.5 million who entered the 2026 competition by taking the PSAT last year.

“Elise is an extraordinary student whose work ethic and determination inspire everyone around her,” said Pasco High School Principal Veronica Machado. “Her recognition as a National Merit Commended Scholar is a reflection of her dedication, intelligence, and commitment to excellence. We are incredibly proud of her and know she has a bright future ahead.”

Elise comes from a family of high achievers, with both of her older sisters previously earning recognition as National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists. She credits the family’s shared drive and academic discipline to her mother, who she describes as the driving force behind their success.

In addition to her academic accomplishments, Elise is a well-rounded student leader at Pasco High School. She is an active member of the Pasco High Marching Band and Color Guard, plays on the varsity tennis team, participates in National Honor Society, and is a Running Start student pursuing her Associate of Arts degree in Science.

Looking ahead, Elise is beginning the college application process with her sights set on attending the University of Washington, where she hopes to pursue a career as an optometrist.

According to NMSC, commended scholars are assessed on a national basis, not by state. A spokesperson noted:

“Those being named commended scholars have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that the recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Pasco School District congratulates Elise and her family on this tremendous achievement and looks forward to celebrating her continued accomplishments.
