STUDENTS
Student Rights and Responsibilities
All students who attend the district’s schools shall comply with the written policies, rules, and regulations of the schools; shall pursue the required course of studies; and shall submit to the authority of staff of the schools, subject to such forms of discipline as the school officials shall determine.
Each year, the district shall make available to all students, their parent(s) or guardian(s) and staff written information pertaining to student rights, conduct, and discipline. The information will be developed with the participation of staff, parents, and community members.
The district will develop definitions for common student behaviors and build consensus on what constitutes manifestation of those behaviors. The definitions will also address differences between major and minor manifestations of problem behaviors to identify those behaviors that teachers and other classroom staff can generally address and those behaviors that are so severe that an administrator or designee should be involved. The intent of these common definitions is to help district staff identify and address differences in the perception of subjective misbehaviors and reduce the effect of implicit bias in addressing student conduct.
The school principal and certificated building staff shall confer at least annually to develop and/or review student conduct standards and the uniform enforcement of those standards at each school. They shall also confer annually to establish criteria for determining when certificated employees must complete classes to improve classroom management skills.
Parent(s) or guardian(s) shall also be advised of their right to review classroom materials. No student in a research or experimentation project supported by federal funds shall be required to submit to psychiatric or psychological examination testing or treatment which might reveal specified personal information without prior written parental or guardian consent. The parent(s) or guardian(s) shall have the right to file a complaint with the school superintendent for abridgement of this provision.
