Homeless Education Information
Under federal law, homeless children and youth are entitled to immediate enrollment in school and educational stability. The law defines homeless children as lacking a "fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence." Examples of children who would fall under this definition are:
Sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship
Living in motels or camp grounds due to lack of alternative accommodations
Abandoned or living in emergency or transitional shelters
Sleeping locations not usually used as a sleeping accommodation (e.g. park benches, underpasses, etc.)
Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, bus or train stations, etc.
